Tenant Participation Standards

Tenant Participation Accreditation is a robust and structured process for assessing how well landlords involve tenants and residents in their services.

Our accreditation will highlight that an organisation involves residents effectively and will flag up any opportunities for improvement.

The TP Standards Accreditation is awarded at three levels: Gold, Silver and Bronze.

The Criteria:

  1. The landlord has an effective participation strategy

  2. The landlord provides good information to tenants

  3. There are effective tenant involvement structures

  4. Tenants are involved in making decisions

  5. The landlord works in partnership with tenants

  6. Tenants are involved in the scrutiny of their landlord’s performance and self- assessment

  7. There are sufficient resources and support to enable tenant participation

  8. Staff have a good awareness of tenant participation

  9. The landlord has realistic timescales for tenant participation

  10. The landlord is committed to promoting equal opportunities

The Framework

The framework that we use to assess the TP standards was developed by our colleagues in TPAS Scotland. It recognises landlords who demonstrate excellence in tenant participation and provides an in-depth assessment of your engagement practices and activities. Most importantly, accreditation can then be used as a tool for continuous improvement.

Supporting Communities has adapted the Scottish model to reflect Northern Ireland's regulatory requirements and has created a unique scoring matrix aligned to Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Benchmarking

As the Independent Tenant Organisation for NI, we use accreditation to help landlords raise the bar for tenant participation and exceed the minimum standards as set out in the Tenant Participation Strategy NI. It will act as a benchmark against other landlords in NI, ROI and across the UK.

Supporting Communities' Tenant Participation Standards also enable social landlords to assess their progress in meeting the Consumer Standard as determined by the Department for Communities’ Regulatory Branch.

We can answer the question of how well a landlord is meeting their tenant participation goals, including:

  • Is your Housing Association meeting best-practice standards in tenant involvement?

  • How effective is your organisation in involving tenants?

  • Has your service improved as a result of putting tenants at the ‘heart’ of your business?

Why Meet the Standards?

  • Ensure your approach is effective and offers the best value for money

  • Validate excellence in tenant and community engagement

  • Drive your business forward & shape your services to meet the needs of your tenants
