Connecting Communities: Our Year Supporting the Digital Landline Switchover

This past year, Supporting Communities embarked on an ambitious mission across Northern Ireland. Our dedicated team has been working tirelessly to ensure that older and more vulnerable residents are fully informed and supported through the UK's once-in-a-generation digital landline switchover.
Understanding the Change
The UK's home phone service is undergoing a significant upgrade that will affect millions of households. This transition, which has already begun and will continue over the next few years, will see most landline calls made over broadband lines rather than traditional copper wires. While the switchover should be straightforward for most people, there are important steps that residents need to take to ensure their services continue uninterrupted.
Our Community-Centred Approach
A Lisburn Group learning about the switchover
Recognising that this major technological shift could feel overwhelming for many, Supporting Communities partnered with BT to deliver comprehensive community outreach across Northern Ireland. Our digital team spent the summer and autumn months travelling to libraries, community centres, and local gatherings, bringing this vital information directly to the people who need it most.
The heart of our approach was simple: face-to-face conversation. Rather than relying solely on written materials or online resources, we prioritised personal interaction, giving people the opportunity to ask questions, express concerns, and receive tailored guidance about their specific situations.
“I had no idea this change was happening. I live alone and rely on my landline every day. The session helped me understand what to expect and gave me peace of mind. I even took a leaflet for my neighbour.”
Remarkable Results
The impact of our outreach efforts has been impressive. By 31 March 2025, our team had successfully delivered 101 information sessions, directly reaching over 1,200 participants across various community events throughout Northern Ireland. Additionally, we gathered valuable insights from over 800 surveyed participants since the project began in May 2024.
These figures signify more than mere statistics. They embody genuine conversations with actual individuals, each contributing to our insight into community needs and helping us refine our approach to better support vulnerable populations during this transition.
“What made this project truly special was the ability to support people’s experience of the switchover process. We weren’t just sharing information; we were a trusted voice, able to listen carefully and make sure people felt seen and heard. It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience to be part of something that genuinely has raised awareness and makes a difference to their migration journey through the switchover.”
Celebrating Collaboration
BT Tower Celebration Event
One of the highlights of our year was attending a special celebration at the BT Tower in London, where we joined other charities that have been a part of this important journey. Meeting fellow organisations that share our commitment to keeping everyone connected was truly inspiring. The event underscored the power of collaboration and highlighted the efforts of numerous passionate individuals and groups working together towards the shared goal of ensuring that no one is left behind during this digital transition.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to BT for their support throughout this project and for bringing together such a dedicated network of community organisations.
Looking Forward
We are excited to report that our partnership with BT has been extended. The project will continue for several more months, allowing us to reach even more communities and provide ongoing support as the switchover progresses.
Our commitment remains unwavering: ensuring that older and more vulnerable people across Northern Ireland have the information, reassurance, and support they need to navigate this significant change.
The digital landline switchover represents progress, but progress that should benefit everyone. Through our continued partnership with BT and our presence in communities across Northern Ireland, we're working to ensure that technological advancements truly serve all members of our society.
As we move forward, we remain dedicated to ensuring that no one faces this transition alone and that every person has access to the support and information they need to stay connected with the people and services that matter most to them.
