Habinteg Housing was the first Housing Association in Northern Ireland to undertake Supporting Communities' OCN Level 2 accredited Tenant Participation and Community Development Course. From late November 2015 to mid-February 2016, twenty nine staff members including Community Assistants, Housing Officers, Housing Managers and Quality Performance Manager participated in lively discussions focusing on their own experiences and new and innovative approaches.

Supporting Communities tutors thoroughly enjoyed delivering the course and challenged staff to think differently about Tenant Participation emphasising the need that “every customer contact is an opportunity to get involved”. Some excellent examples of Tenant Participation were highlighted in the sessions, key suggestions and ideas raised as part of the discussions were collated and a report produced.

“I found the Tenant Participation and Community Development course provided by Supporting Communities to be an excellent, invaluable source of information. Not only did the course inform and educate me on Tenant Participation it opened my eyes to the fact that tenants have the power to make a real difference in their own communities and lives, to work with landlords to improve the standard of housing conditions and services.
I think it’s wonderful that Supporting Communities champions to educate and empower tenant’s and service providers alike. All the Supporting Communities tutors were highly skilled, professional, helpful and patient. I would have no doubt in recommending this excellent organisation.”
